Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Gelco Damper Repair: The Henderson Owner’s Guide
A Gelco damper repair in Henderson typically runs $240 – $480 installed, depending on whether we’re replacing the damper plate, the cable assembly, or the entire frame. Most jobs take under two hours once we’re on site, and we keep Gelco-compatible parts stocked on the truck so there’s no second trip. You’ll usually discover the problem the first cold night of fall: the lever won’t budge, the plate won’t seal, or you can feel a draft rolling down the chimney even with the damper closed.
We’re Flint Chimney Co Henderson, part of the Garrison Partners family founded in 2002. We are an independent service provider, not affiliated with Gelco, but we’ve been installing and repairing their damper systems across Henderson for years. If you have a Gelco top-sealing or throat damper that’s failed, we can match it, price it, and fix it fast.
Which Gelco Models This Applies To
Gelco makes two main damper lines we see in Henderson homes. The first is the standard cast-iron throat damper, which sits just above the firebox and opens with a lever or poker control. The second is the Gelco top-sealing damper, which mounts at the flue top and operates by a cable that runs down through the firebox. The repair path differs a lot between these two, so identifying which one you have matters before anyone gives you a number. If you can see a metal plate when you look up from inside the firebox, that’s the throat damper. If the firebox is empty and only a cable or chain hangs there, it’s a top-sealing unit installed at the crown.
The OEM-versus-aftermarket question comes up a lot with Gelco. Their cast-iron dampers are solid, but the control cables and plate hardware wear out long before the frame does. In most cases, a quality aftermarket cable or plate kit from Copperfield or Olympia Chimney does the job identically, costs 20 – 30% less, and lasts the same five to eight years under normal use. The one place we stick with genuine Gelco OEM is the cable pulley and bracket assembly on top-sealing dampers. The tolerances there are tighter, and a slightly-off pulley means a damper that binds or won’t fully seat.
Styles & brands we work with

Signs Your Gelco Damper Repair Is Failing
- The handle or lever is stuck or takes real force to move. This usually means rust build-up on the pivot points or a frayed cable that’s catching inside the conduit. Forcing it makes the underlying damage worse.
- You feel cold air falling down the chimney in summer, or warm air escaping in winter. The damper plate isn’t seating flush. On throat dampers, the plate warps over years of heat cycling. On top-sealing dampers, it’s almost always a stretched cable.
- You hear a metallic rattle when the wind blows. That’s a loose damper plate or a top-sealing damper whose seal has degraded to the point the plate is vibrating in its frame.
- The cable on a top-sealing damper is slack or hangs loose. Cable stretch is the most common Gelco failure we replace in Henderson. Once the cable goes slack, the damper won’t close all the way no matter how many times you tighten the handle.
- Smoke backs up into the room on a normal fire. The damper isn’t opening fully, or a warped plate is restricting the flue opening more than it should. This is a functional problem, not just a comfort one.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A Gelco throat damper plate replacement in Henderson runs $240 – $340 installed. A full top-sealing damper replacement, including the new cable, pulley, and mounting hardware, runs $380 – $480. The price difference comes down to whether we’re swapping a plate or pulling the old frame and resetting a new assembly on the flue top.
Every repair gets a written price before we touch anything, and the price you approve is the price on the invoice. That’s the Garrison Standard, the same operating code every Garrison Partners location follows. The work carries our 365-Day Done Right Promise in writing: if a covered repair fails within a full year, we return and fix it at no charge. Parts are professional-grade, matched to the job, and specified by name on your paperwork. We don’t pad the parts line.
DIY or Call Us?
There’s one thing you can safely do before calling: open the damper, look up with a flashlight, and note whether you see a visible plate or just a cable. That tells you which damper type you have and takes thirty seconds. You can also try closing and opening the damper slowly to gauge where the binding or slack is. That’s the end of the safe DIY list.
Replacing a Gelco damper means working inside the flue or on the roof line, often with rusted hardware under tension or reaching into awkward, hot firebox spaces. Throat damper plates are heavy. Top-sealing damper cables route through narrow conduits. Get it wrong and you’ve got an unsealed chimney, a draft problem, or a part that fails again in six months. If you’re in Henderson and your Gelco damper needs work, call us at (775) 375-4267. Tell me what the flue looks like, and I’ll tell you what it costs – no guessing, no padding.
FAQs
A Gelco damper in Henderson typically lasts 8 – 12 years with regular use, though throat damper plates in wood-burning fireplaces often warp or rust closer to the 7-year mark because of repeated heating and cooling cycles in our dry desert climate. Top-sealing damper cables usually fail before the plate does, often around year 8, when the cable stretches past the adjustment range. If your damper is older than a decade, expect some part of it to need attention soon. Call (775) 375-4267 for a free estimate.
Yes, in most cases we repair the failed component rather than replacing the whole assembly. A stretched cable, a worn pulley, a rusted pivot pin, or a warped plate can each be swapped independently. Full replacement only makes sense when the frame itself has cracked or rusted through, which we see more often on older throat dampers in Henderson homes that haven’t been swept regularly. The repair-or-replace call is made with photos you can see before you approve anything.
A standard Gelco damper repair takes 90 minutes to two hours from the moment we start to the moment we test the open and closed seal. Throat damper plate replacement is faster, usually under an hour and a half. Top-sealing damper cable replacement with rooftop access takes closer to two hours, especially on two-story Henderson homes where the flue top is harder to reach. Call (775) 375-4267 and we’ll give you a written price before any work starts.
Yes, our trucks carry Gelco-compatible damper plates, cables, pulleys, and mounting hardware, along with parts for DuraFlex and HeatShield systems. That means most damper repairs in Henderson get done same visit, not scheduled for a second trip. If we don’t have the exact spec on the truck, we’ll tell you before you agree to anything and get it ordered that day. Call (775) 375-4267 for a free estimate.
