Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Henderson Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible chimney caps throughout Henderson, with most complete replacements running between $425 and $780 installed, depending on cap size, flue type, and the condition of the chase top. Most Henderson jobs are completed within a week of the initial inspection. The call usually starts the same way: smoke is backing into the house during a windy afternoon, or someone spots a pile of rusted metal in the yard after a storm and realizes it used to be attached to their chimney. The cap is the first line of defense against water, animals, and wind downdrafts. When it fails, the flue that DuraFlex liner is protecting takes the hit next.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex makes a few distinct cap lines, and they are not interchangeable. The DuraFlex 304 and 316 stainless steel cap systems cover the majority of residential installs in Henderson, with the 316 intended for high-moisture or coastal environments. We also see the DuraFlex multi-flue cap on larger chase tops in newer Green Valley Ranch and Anthem builds.

The compatibility gotcha most owners run into is this: a cap listed as “universal” will not fit a DuraFlex slip-fit liner without an adapter. DuraFlex liners use a specific male coupling, and the cap base must match that profile rather than a generic round flue interior. We measure the flue inside diameter, the liner crown height, and the chase top thickness before specifying a cap. A quarter-inch mismatch means the cap wobbles in wind or leaks at the base. We also keep DuraFlex’s standard tension-fit and twist-lock adapters on the truck, so we do not have to order a second trip.

Aftermarket options do exist for DuraFlex, and some are fine. But the metallurgy matters: a cheap galvanized cap on a stainless DuraFlex liner creates galvanic corrosion at the contact points, and in Henderson’s summer heat that joint degrades faster than it would in a milder climate. We stock the DuraFlex OEM caps because the alloy match is correct, not because we get a better margin on them. The price difference is usually $40 to $90, and the OEM cap lasts years longer on a stainless liner.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

  • Smoke rolling back into the room on windy days. The cap’s baffle or wind band is either missing, corroded through, or the cap was never sized to the flue. Downdraft pressure overcomes the liner’s natural draw.
  • Water staining on the ceiling around the chimney chase. A failed cap joint or rusted base allows rain to run down the outside of the DuraFlex liner and pool at the firebox or chase floor. We see this most often after Henderson’s monsoon season, which runs June through September.
  • Rust flakes at the cleanout or in the firebox. The cap is oxidizing from the inside and will need replacement before the flue below it starts eating the same moisture.
  • Squirrel or pigeon activity around the roofline. The cap mesh is torn or the cap is completely gone. A chimney without a functioning cap is an open cavity for nesting material, which becomes a chimney fire hazard once dried material sits within reach of rising embers.
  • You can see the cap is missing or tilted from the street. If it shifted enough to be visible, the base screws or tension band have already failed. The remaining metal may be scoring the liner crown or denting the top course of the chase.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For a standard single-flue DuraFlex cap in Henderson, installed, expect $425 to $650. Larger multi-flue caps on finished masonry chases, or custom jobs where the existing masonry crown is cracked and needs a remediation plate first, run $600 to $780. The range depends on flue diameter, roof access setup, and whether we need to replace the cap’s storm collar or base plate at the same time.

Every quote is written before the work begins. It lists the cap, the adapter, the labor, any required chase top work, and the full-year repair guarantee. What it does not include is a number we change at the truck. The price on the invoice is the price on the quote, every time. If the cap fails or leaks within a year of the install, we return and make it right at no charge. That is the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it is in writing on every job.

Hank Delano will not tell you to replace a cap unless he can show you why on camera. The inspection includes a photo report of the flue, the cap, and any water damage present. If the cap has life left in it, he will say so plainly. If it does not, you will see exactly what the camera sees before you approve a replacement.

DIY or Call Us?

If you want to check a few things from the ground, by all means: look for visible rust, missing mesh, or a tilt you can spot from the street with binoculars. Those are observation tasks, not repair tasks. What we tell Henderson homeowners to avoid is ladder work on a sloped tile roof with a cap in one hand and a drill in the other. The fall risk on a two-story Henderson home with concrete tile roofing is real, and the cap itself has sharp stainless edges that cut through work gloves. We also never recommend walking the chase top without knowing what is under it. We have found cracked flue crown sections that would have given way under body weight.

If the inspection shows a failed cap, call (775) 375-4267 for a free estimate. The quote is written. The work is guaranteed. The cap is coming off the truck, not out of a mail-order box.
