Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.
Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation: The Henderson Owner’s Guide
Copperfield chimney cap installation in Henderson typically runs $275 to $520 installed, depending on cap size, mounting surface condition, and whether we’re replacing a rusted cap or adding a cap where a flue has been bare. We stock Copperfield caps in common residential sizes on our trucks, so most installations happen in a single visit. The way most Henderson owners discover they need this done: they spot rust flakes on the roof or patio, they hear water dripping inside the firebox after a downpour, or a home inspection flags a crown that’s taken on moisture.
If your Copperfield cap is warped, the mesh screen is torn, or the base plate has separated from the flue tile, that cap is no longer doing its job. Here’s what that job is: a chimney cap sits on top of the flue and does three things. It stops rain from pouring straight down into the firebox. It keeps birds, squirrels, and roof rats from nesting in the flue. And its spark-arrestor mesh catches embers before they land on a shake roof or dry landscaping, which matters a lot in Henderson where our fire season runs long and hot.
Flint Chimney Co Henderson is an independent chimney service company. We install and service Copperfield caps regularly, but we’re not affiliated with the Copperfield brand itself.
Which Copperfield Models This Applies To
Copperfield makes caps in three main configurations: single-flue bolt-on caps, multi-flue caps that span two or more flues, and top-mount caps that replace the existing crown when the crown is cracked. The single-flue bolt-on cap is the one we replace most often in Henderson, typically in sizes ranging from 8×8 inches to 17×17 inches to match the outside dimension of the clay flue tile.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha we run into weekly: Copperfield caps are sized by inside flue tile measurement, not outside. If your flue tile measures 13×13 on the outside, you likely need an 8×8 or 8×12 cap, depending on wall thickness. Measure the outside of the tile, subtract the tile wall thickness on each side, and that’s your cap size. If you can’t safely get on the roof to measure, we do that as part of the service call.
OEM versus aftermarket: for Copperfield specifically, we stock OEM Copperfield caps whenever a customer has an existing Copperfield base plate that’s still sound but the hood or mesh has failed. That lets us swap the cap body without removing the base plate, which saves on labor and avoids disturbing a good mortar seal. Aftermarket equivalents work fine when we’re mounting fresh, but on Copperfield vented gas logs and multi-flue setups, we stick with Copperfield’s own products because the base geometry and screen tension are drop-in matches.
Copperfield’s stainless steel caps are our default recommendation for Nevada weather. We also stock galvanized Copperfield caps for tighter budgets. The stainless caps hold up better under Henderson’s UV exposure and the occasional alkaline dust that blows in from the east.

Signs Your Copperfield Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
- Rust streaks down the chimney chase or flue tile. This means the cap’s galvanized coating has worn through or the cap was never stainless. Once rust streaks appear, the base plate is usually the next thing to perforate. Moisture is already getting past the cap edges.
- Water in the firebox after rain. That’s a direct failure. A functioning Copperfield cap keeps rain out even in wind-driven storms. If you see puddled water or soggy ash, the cap is either cracked, mis-sized, or the mortar joint between the cap base and the crown has opened up.
- The mesh screen is torn or sagging. Torn spark-arrestor mesh means embers can exit the flue, which is a genuine fire hazard here in Henderson. Sagging screen also signals that internal support brackets have oxidized through.
- You can hear or see animals. Chimney swifts, starlings, or squirrels getting in means the mesh has failed or the cap has lifted off the flue entirely. We find a surprising number of caps on the ground in backyards after one of our windstorms, which brings us to the next symptom.
- The cap is gone or visibly tilted. Henderson’s spring wind gusts regularly push 50 to 60 mph. A Copperfield cap that was never properly secured to the flue tile, or that had compromised mounting brackets, will shift or blow off. A tilted cap is pulling on the mortar joint and will leak within a season.
If any of these are present, the fix is usually not the cap itself alone. We will want to look at the crown under the cap and the top course of flue tile while we’re up there.

AfterReplacement Cost & What’s Included
A Copperfield single-flue cap installation in Henderson is typically $275 to $520 all-in. The cap itself runs $90 to $220 depending on size and material (galvanized versus stainless). Labor is $160 to $280, and the remaining cost covers the high-temp sealant, stainless mounting hardware, and disposal of the old cap. If the crown has surface cracks that haven’t yet reached the flue, we can seal those as part of the same visit for roughly $175 to $275 more, and we’ll show you photos before recommending that work.
What drives the range on a cap install: roof pitch and access, whether we need to cut a custom base plate for an odd-sized flue, and whether the old cap was cemented on so thoroughly that removal takes an extra half hour. What does not drive the range: surprises. We give you a written price before any work starts. The number we hand you up front is the number you pay.
Every Copperfield cap installation carries the same written guarantee as all of our repairs: one full year under the 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the cap loosens, the mesh fails, or the seal leaks within that year, we return and fix it at no charge. No argument, no deductible, no second invoice.

DIY or Call Us?
Climbing onto a Henderson roof with clay tile underfoot is the first reason we tell most homeowners to call us for this job. Tile roofs here are slippery, brittle, and easy to crack under a person’s weight. If your home has a concrete tile roof, we use ladder standoffs and roof boards to spread the load. That’s our problem to manage, not yours.
What you can safely check from the ground: run a pair of binoculars over the cap and look for rust, tilt, missing mesh, or bird activity. If you see a problem, you’ve got your answer. What tends to go wrong with DIY on this specific part: owners order a Copperfield cap based on outside tile measurement and get a cap two inches too small, or they climb up, realize the old cap is cemented to the crown with construction adhesive, and end up chiseling divots into the crown trying to free it. Then we get called anyway, and the crown repair costs more than the cap install would have.
If you’d rather we handle it, call (775) 375-4267. We’ll set a time, show up in uniform with the right cap sizes already on the truck, and hand you a written price before a tool comes out.
FAQs
A stainless Copperfield cap in Henderson typically lasts 12 to 18 years, while a galvanized cap lasts 8 to 12 years, depending on sun exposure and how much alkaline dust the cap sees. The base plate and mesh screen fail before the hood in almost every case, so we check both for perforation on every sweep and inspection.
In most cases, no. If the mesh is torn but the base and hood are sound, we can sometimes replace the screen on Copperfield models where it’s designed as a separate component. If the base plate is rusted through or the hood has stress cracks from wind, a full cap replacement is the honest fix, and it’s often cheaper than patching.
A standard single-flue Copperfield cap installation takes 45 to 90 minutes on site, including removing the old cap, cleaning the flue tile top edge, mounting the new cap, and sealing it. Multi-flue caps or caps needing a custom base plate add time, and we’ll tell you that before we start.
We stock Copperfield caps in the most common Henderson residential sizes on our trucks, including 8×8, 8×12, 12×12, and 13×13, in both galvanized and stainless. If you need a non-standard size or a multi-flue span, we can typically source it within a few business days. Call (775) 375-4267 with your flue measurement and we’ll tell you what’s in stock and what the installed price would be.
For most of our Henderson customers, from Green Valley Ranch to Anthem to the older neighborhoods along Boulder Highway, a Copperfield cap replacement is a one-visit fix. Tell me what the flue looks like, and I’ll tell you what it costs, no guessing, no padding. Call (775) 375-4267 for a free estimate, or to schedule a look at the cap you have now.
